Spring 2011

It was a busy spring for us and while we didn't make it out of San Diego, we had a lot of fun sticking around town. Here Jane and I are on a little nature walk in Florida Canyon, which run between our house and Balboa Park.

Jane has been stylin' some awesome, fashion-forward outfits.

Our neighbors across the street hired a mariachi band one night and we had a blast peeking over our fence to watch and listen to the festivities. The drummer saw us and twirled his drumsticks around for us. :-)

Turned out we could still hear and see everything from our bedroom.

The music was so raucous and fun that it made us want to jump...and the following photos reminded me of the work of Philippe Halsman who often photographed his famous subjects in mid-air.

One Sunday Jane got a blue balloon at the farmer's market. She made it clear to us that she preferred to hold the string with her hand instead of us tying it around her wrist. I was afraid she would lose the balloon within a few minutes. But she held tight to it all the way home...

...and during her entire nap...

...and playtime...

...and dinner...

...right up until bedtime. I was quite impressed.

We found an amazing park right on the bay...with its very own beach!

Ah Dylan...be still my heart. Here is our dear friend Dylan, who spent a fun afternoon with us. In addition to being as sweet as can be and muy guapo, Mr. D. is very enthusiastic about trains. We had a blast setting up Jane's little train set, which has been sadly neglected since we took it out of the box. Thanks for hanging with us D-man!

Meanwhile, Jane has been going through an umbrella phase.

Here is Jane with her friend Avery, having a "coffee party."

Jane continued to serve us post-bath.

I managed to get Jane's hair into pigtails. It was a thrill for both Jane and myself for about 5 minutes...sadly (for me) she has not expressed a desire for pigtails since these pictures were taken.

Our dear friends Matt and Michael recently moved from San Diego to Louisville, Kentucky for work, and while we are excited for them and this new chapter in their lives we miss them very much. Right before they left, Matt came over to help Chris with a batch of beer and I snapped off these cute pictures.

Every spring Balboa Park holds Family Science Day and every institution sets up a cool science interactive outside on the Prado. MoPA has a very cool camera obscura that fits up to 15 people inside and that is what we shared during Family Science Day. For those of you who have never experienced a camera obscura, it is basically a light proof box with a tiny hole in one side. The light entering through the tiny hold project an upside down and moving image of outside onto the opposite wall of the camera obscura. It is almost magical.

Speaking of magic...check out these beautiful beets that grow and Chris' farm.

And here is the tractor that Chris drives. Cool.

Here is Jane playing around on the loading dock at Suzies' (not to worry both Chris and I were monitoring her every move).

We had a fun-filled day with Nanny and Papa at the Wild Animal Park (which is actually called the Safari Park now). While the animals were very interesting, I think the best part of the day for Jane was when Papa bought her a humungous ice cream cone - but I was too busy cleaning up after Miss Jane to snap any pictures.

Nanny made Jane this awesome poncho, which has become a favorite around here -- both as an article of clothing and as a blanket. Thank you so much Nanny!

Jane is checking her email on her small "puter" while Pinky looks on.

Pedicures! A new weekly tradition around here.

I am pretty sure the wee-one is responsible for the mud on Chris' face.

Playdough!

And finally, fun with brown paper bags....I remember doing this when I was a little kid.
